If you’re like me, then you like to hear a little bit of everything in the music you listen to. You need a good balance.

You can get that with this one type of musical form, which is super fun to play and learn. It’s called Tahmila.

Tahmila is great because it’s dance music, traditional dance music. It’s bound to be fun because it’s usually played with a whole ensemble.

The fun part of Tahmila is that there is room for solos, followed by the ensemble section answering the call of the soloist. It’s what is called a “call and answer” section.

Here’s my take on Tahmila, and a short excerpt of Tahmila Suznak.

If you liked this, then you’ll definitely like this.

My friend Michael Ibrahim is head of the National Arab Orchestra based in Michigan. If you are in the USA, you should definitely check them out. I am a big fan their work.
