nahawand

This month I have something special for you on YouTube; you’ll see a modulation from Maqam Nahawand to Maqam Saba.

One of the hallmarks of a good oud player with a good knowledge of maqam is the ability to move from one maqam to another. We call this modulation.

It happens a lot in middle eastern music, in songs, and improvisation, the Art of Taqasim.

As we become better and better oud players we need to explore our creativity and find out what works and what doesn’t.

Some modulation work well, some don’t. Some are conventional and easy on the ears. Some are uncommon and hard to swallow.

I’ve been playing and studying this music for more than half my life now, and I’m still learning new modulations.

This month, on YouTube, you’ll see a series of videos showing you some changes from one maqam to another.

Even if you’re a beginner, this will be valuable to listen to so you get exposed to these sounds and the ideas. You might see things differently and start making some breakthroughs, or you might just side back and enjoy the ride.

Here’s the first video:

Did you enjoy this modulation? Let me know.
