Great idea to motivate practice. Here’s my first effort.

Great page, thanks. I’m 55 started playing the Oud 5 years ago and it’s the best thing I ever did musically. I had no teachers, only YouTube and recordings. I made many mistakes and had to un-learn many bad habits. Still struggle with the right wrist control to keep the sound even to control the speed and rhythm. I’m also learning the Baglama and Classic Kemence which are also amazing instruments. So you are never to old and as long as what you play you play well, you don’t have to be the best in the world. Competition isn’t always a good motivator.

    1. Navid

Hey that’s awesome. No, you’re never too old. I can’t remember who it was but I heard a story about a well-known Cellist who kept practising even in his old age and when asked why he keeps practising, he replied that, “I think I’m making progress”.

Brain still insists that I’m reading guitar music! It all gets a bit uncertain in the bass. I will Keep at it.

      Thank you! Sound great!

great exercises and great ‘motivator’ for practicing at least 15-20 minutes every day. Until now I succeeded (though I have an advantage, being home from work this month… ) oh, and I do not do ‘movies ‘(being too ugly I guess, don’t wanna scare any one 😉

  7. Ernest

oh, I would like to add that I practice now with a metronome and getting the tempo up gradually, it works very well for me (keeps me better focused)

    1. Navid

That’s great. Use whatever tools that help.

I think your intonation improved since your very first video! Awesome.

  9. Tony M

Christmas messed up the practice schedule, so this doesn’t really sound much better! I’m determined to complete the December challenge and this is the best I could do…

week 4 challenge: MUCH harder than the others! Intonation a real problem the higher up you go. It can only get better, I hope!

You did a great job on the way up! The going down always gets me too. You’ll be dominating the Oud with this exercise in no time. 🙂

Week 4 after practice – a bit better, but it’s still very hard to find the notes on the way down. An enjoyable challenge and a worthwhile thing to do. I have enrolled on the ‘Masterclass’ course now and it looks great. I am looking forward to getting to the Taksim lesson! Thanks Navid!
