If you liked last week’s post that showed you how to create a short musical phrase and turn it into a longer musical phrase, then you’re going to like this week’s post. This is another technique you hear during taqsim. I call it, “Bouncing Down Stairs”.

Check out the video below to learn how to do it!

Bouncing Down the Stairs

Difficulty: easy to moderate

What?

This technique is a melodic technique or taqsim technique that I often hear during taqsim. It is a different way of descending a maqam or scale.

Why?

You can use this technique to move down to the root or tonic of the maqam and make a pause. You don’t have to always pause on the root of the maqam, you can use this to pause on any note, or you can repeat this technique on different notes as I do in the video.

How?

In order to do this technique you’ll have to know how to do a pull-off and a hammer-on on the Oud.

Tips for Success:

Try this technique in different variations. Start on different notes, try it in a different maqam, and listen to other Oud players’ taqsim to get ideas on how to use this.
